4. Selection procedure

1) For selection of entries, JASNAOE will set up a “Ship of the Year Selection Committee” (hereafter referred to as the “Selection Committee”) comprising experts on ships and oceans as well as journalists.
2) JASNAOE will also constitute a preliminary review committee comprising naval architects and ocean engineers, selected from JASNAOE’s supporting organizations. The preliminary review committee will review all the submitted materials and make a preliminary selection and recommendation of entries to the Selection Committee based on the following assessment criteria:
  • Uniqueness and innovativeness of technology (including concept)
  • Degree of perfection of the work and the technology used in it
  • Spillover effect on society
  • Newsworthiness or attractiveness to society
The “Ship of the Year Special Technological Award” will be given to the work that is considered by the preliminary review committee to have a particularly outstanding technology.

The Selection Committee will also choose an outstanding work in each category, for the “Ship of the Year Category Awards.”

Entries submitted to the competition will be published in the May issue of bulletin / "KANRIN." In June, details of the prizewinning entries will be released to the media.
